About the tutor 0434 888 321
My name is Terri MacKenzie.
I'm a primary school teacher with 20 years' experience both in classrooms and in support teacher roles. I have extensive experience teaching children with emotional and behavioural challenges, ADHD, ASD, Dyslexia and other Specific Learning Difficulties. I also have extensive experience teaching children with vision impairment as I worked for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.
I personally understand the concerns that parents have when their children are struggling at school. My happy, confident son began kindergarten with enthusiasm, but within 6 months he was depressed, lacked confidence and developed anxiety about going to school. It became obvious within the first year of schooling that he wasn't keeping up with his peers and his teachers were baffled why he wasn't learning. They grasped at any excuse they could to divert the issue, including telling me it was just because I'm a bad parent!
At the end of kindergarten I was steered by an understanding paediatrician to look into Dyslexia. After an assessment I was told that yes indeed, my boy showed many of the indicators of Dyslexia, but there was hope that he could learn all the basic skills he would need to succeed at school and in life!
Dyslexics learn differently to others in the classroom and I realised I needed more knowledge to help my son succeed at school! We tried a few tutoring organisations but without specialist knowledge of how to teach dyslexics or children who learn differently there was no success at all, and we were virtually throwing our money away! By the middle of Year 1, I finally found a specialist Dyslexia and MSL tutor who really knew what my son needed to learn and how he needed to learn it.
Six months later, with Dyslexia and MSL tuition, my boy was reading at the same level and even above some of his peers! His writing had greatly improved and his spelling was fantastic. The most significant change however, was that his confidence was back. He enjoyed school again and had a desire to learn! He felt that he could learn anything!
When I realised how much my child's tutor had changed my son's life I wanted to learn more. I have since been trained in specialist tutoring techniques and am currently continuing my studies of Dyslexia and other Specific Learning Difficulties. This training makes it possible for me to offer you a tutoring service that really will help struggling readers, writers and mathematicians, whether they have a diagnosis or not!
My teaching experience and studies will assist me to provide a fantastic tutorial service which will aim to teach your child their basic skills in a better way! I want all children to experience the feeling of success and parents to see the dramatic change that a great specialist Dyslexia and MSL tutor can make to your child's education! It doesn't matter whether your child has any diagnosis at all, specialist tutoring may make the difference!
